From Designer Condoms To 3D Glasses: Wacky Hotel Minibar Items

Hotel minibars have a bit of a naughty reputation. After all, they tempt and tease world-weary travelers with salty-sweet goodness at all hours of the day, and then come with a double-digit price tag to boot! But sometimes, the items up for grabs can at least provide guests with a moment of amusement. Some hotels feature rather surprising minibar offerings — we’re talking walking sticks and 24-karat gold vibrators. It’s enough to make guests pause in their perusal of the candy selection and say, “Wait, what?” We’ve come across some of the wackiest minibar items during our travels; here are some of our favorites:

Alexander Wang-Designed Condoms at the Thompson Beverly Hills

Get your groove on at the Thompson Beverly Hills.

At the flashy Thompson Beverly Hills, spending the night with that special someone just got more fashionable. Designer Alexander Wang created special packaging for PROPER ATTIRE condoms, which are for sale at all Thomspon properties, as well as on the brand’s website. Couples pay $5.99 for a pack of three assorted (which include extra large, ultra-thin, and studded — oh my!) and proceeds benefit Planned Parenthood.

Detoxifying Spray at Fifteen Beacon, Boston

Sobering up is made easier at Boston's Fifteen Beacon.

This exquisite boutique in Boston never lacks for service, so it should come as no surprise that the health of its guests is of utmost importance to management — especially its hungover guests. Minibars at Fifteen Beacon include an off-beat, all-natural sleep enhancer, City Life Detoxer from Sprayology, for $24. Said to flush away urban toxins, this homeopathic, FDA-approved oral spray is supposed to ease breathing difficulties, coughing, sluggishness, and lung and liver toxicity. All we have to say is, another round, please?

3D Glasses and Walking Sticks at the Ace Hotel — Portland

Go for a walk in another dimension at the Ace Hotel.

This hipster haven hotel is both stylish and eco-friendly, featuring unique amenities that spill out of the minibar and into the living space as interesting design elements. This is certainly the case for the walking sticks the hotel offers guests. The 3D glasses are a bit more circumspectly presented, but their inclusion does not go without notice.

Alice in Wonderland Hand Mirror at the Mondrian Los Angeles

Through the looking glass we go at the Mondrian LA.

This Sunset Strip institution received a head-to-toe makeover a la Wonderland in 2008 from designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz. Outlandish design elements are both whimsical and comfortable, inviting guests to walk through the looking glass with ease. Oversized mirrors double as TV consoles here in an interesting twist on form and functionality. Guests who get particularly inspired by their stay can take a piece of Wonderland home with them — for $25, guests can purchase an Alice in Wonderland hand mirror designed exclusively for the Mondrian by Noriega-Ortiz.

Champagne Bar at The Levin, London

Of course getting tipsy in London is a classy affair.

Minibars at London‘s Levin hotel are not full of your standard sodas and chips. Instead, all rooms at this 12-room boutique feature champagne-stocked minibars. Guests can choose from a selection of bruts, roses, and cuvees, as well as a wide variety of mixers to make the perfect champagne cocktail. And if you’re a bit unsure of how to do just that, the minibar helpfully comes with a book of recipes.

24-Karat Gold Vibrator at the Drake Toronto

Batteries are included at the Drake Toronto.

This funky boutique hotel in Toronto’s newly gentrified Art and Design District is full of unique, modern elements that attract a hip crowd — as does the hot nightclub on-site. But even these riotous visitors might balk at the $400 price tag on one of the hotel’s in-room pleasure packages. The Lap of Luxury set includes a black silk scarf and a 24-karat-gold waterproof vibrator for some serious (and seriously luxurious) sexy time. Batteries are included, so that’s something.

Custom Rubber Ducky at the Hotel Triton, San Francisco

Bath time was never so fun as at the Hotel Triton.

Nothing about this pop-themed Kimpton is ordinary. Full of character, funky furniture and celebrity-designed suites, the Triton is a colorful and unique option in San Francisco. Even the rubber duckies receive makeovers here. These bath time buddies change seasonally, so guests can take a soak with a Leprechaun Duck on St. Patrick’s Day or a San Francisco Giants Duck if they feel like cheering on the home team during a post-game soak.

The Entire Minibar at The Chatwal, New York City

The options are endless at The Chatwal.

This luxury hotel in a landmark building near Times Square evokes the glamorous 1920s — even in guests’ minibars. The treasure trove of goodies includes a cocktail shaker, a set of custom-designed playing cards, chocolates from Paris’ oldest chocolatier (Marie Antoinette was a customer), Lucky Lights candy cigarettes, and a signed copy of American Eve, a novel detailing the scandalous affair-turned-crime and trial of the century between the hotel’s architect, Stanford White, and 1900s it-girl Eveyln Nesbit. This might be the most extensive — and fascinating — minibar to date.

Pleasure Chest at the Bryant Park Hotel

Getting freaky in New York City was just made that much easier.

One of New York’s sexiest boutiques. it should come as no surprise that the Bryant Park Hotel also offers a sex toy menu of items from Pleasure Chest. Featuring a variety of sex toys for women, men, and couples (including vibrators and hand cuffs), the menu assures that guests will be able to get their kicks at this hotel. The hotel once tweeted, “One of our guests last night purchased $1,975 from our pleasure chest sex toy menu-WOW.”
